This month has seen the Government announce a huge range of measures putting our wonderful City and Country First. I have also been busy making sure the voices of people in Lincoln, Skellingthorpe, Bracebridge Heath and Waddington East have been heard loud and clear.
Here is just a selection of measures and issues.
State Pension
At the start of April, the Conservative Government increased the State Pension by 8.5%, meaning pensioners in Lincoln will be £900 better off.
This comes on top of last year’s 10.1% increase and our commitment to the Triple Lock.
Only the Conservatives are on the side of pensioners.
Lincoln Christmas Market
Labour councillors on the City of Lincoln Council continue to refuse to bring back the Christmas Market they so cruelly closed last year – against the wishes of the public and businesses in the City. Here I raise the matter again in Parliament: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/WULGAFoddnbBGuvz
Rwanda Bill
We passed the new law to allow us to deliver a deterrent that will break the business model of the criminal gangs and save lives. This country and this government should decide who comes to the UK, not criminal gangs. It will start the flights and the stop the boats.
We also need to scrap the plans for RAF Scampton to be used to house people who have arrived here illegally.
Defence Investment
Given our RAF Waddington is at the heart of defending our Country, I was especially pleased to see the Prime Minister announce this week that the UK will increase defence spending to 2.5% of our annual income by 2030 - an increase of £75 billion.
This is the biggest increase for a generation and shows how we Conservatives are fully committed to the first duty of any government - the security of the British people.
Given the war in Ukraine and other conflicts around the world including the threat of cyber warfare, we have to strengthen our national security at home and abroad. It has to be a priority for our Country as the world becomes more dangerous and unstable.
It also comes as no surprise to anyone that Labour refuse to commit to this, causing more uncertainty for our defence industry and putting our national security at risk.
Protecting Shopkeepers
The Conservative Government are making assaulting a shop worker a standalone criminal offence. With tougher sentences too.
It is completely unacceptable that shoplifters and those abusing shopworkers think their treatment of those who provide such a great service is acceptable.
I will certainly be supporting this in Parliament - protecting our Lincoln shopworkers and those across the Country.
Western Growth Corridor/Swanpool
I was pleased to recently meet with Cllr. Tom Dyer, Leader of the City of Lincoln Council Conservative Group, at the site of the planned Western Growth Corridor traffic bridge.
The bridge will connect Tritton Road with the Western Growth Corridor development. £20m worth of funding was awarded from Government to ensure this vital infrastructure project could move forward.
